Obituary for Hilbert W. Braun

Hilbert W. Braun, father, farmer, and active member of the community.
Hilbert Braun, of Grandview, Indiana, passed away at age 96, on Friday, July 13, 2018.
Hilbert was born October 10, 1921, in Evanston, Indiana, to Henry and Anna Polster Braun (both deceased). He was raised in Evanston with three brothers, Oscar (deceased), Alfred (deceased), and Clarence (deceased).
Hilbert attended Indiana University until being drafted for service in World War II, serving in the Army Air Corp with the 381st Bomb Group. He was a Tail Gunner on a B17, completing twenty-five successful missions in the European Theater. He was the last surviving member of his flight crew whose missions and experiences were captured in story of same title as their aircraft, This is It. (link) Http://aafo.com/library/history/B-17/b17part3.htm . Following Honorable Discharge from the Air Corp, he was employed by Mulzer Crushed Stone, Tell City, in 1945. He served in various positions until retiring as office manager after 40 years of service, in 1985.
On June 29, 1947, Hilbert married Ruth Cissna and they began a family and farm of their own. Hilbert and Ruth shared this home, in Hammond Township, for 67 years. Children, crops and livestock were raised on this evolving, active family farm.
Hilbert was an active member of the St. John's Lutheran Church congregation and served in many church leadership roles. He served several years as a member of the Spencer County 4-H Board, the Lincoln Drama Association and the North Spencer School Corporation Board during the consolidation of Dale and Chrisney High Schools and the construction of Heritage Hills Jr./Sr. High School.
Hilbert was a quick-witted care-giver and leader of his family, along with his wife, Ruth, who valued education, hard work, and community service.
He is survived by two of his three children, Dr. Arnold (Martha) Braun, of Grandview, Katherine Braun (Gary) Stoffel, of Greensburg, IN, and daughter-in-law, Dr. Carol Jean Braun, of Grandview. In addition he has four grand-daughters, Dr. Michelle Braun of Grandview, Pamela Stoffel (Matthew), Kuntz of Normal, IL, Dr. Amanda Braun of Shipshewana, IN., and Cindy Stoffel, CNM of Chicago, IL. His great-grandchildren include, Gabriel Jackson (age10), Griffin Kuntz (age 6), Julianne Jackson (age 6) and Greyson Kuntz (age 3). He will rejoice in reunion with his wife, Ruth (deceased 2014) and son, Dr. Kenneth Braun (deceased 2010).
Services are 11 A.M. Friday, July 20, 2018 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Evanston, Indiana with Rev. Rodney Schmeltz officiating. Burial is at St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Visitation is from 4 P.M. until 8 P.M. Thursday, July 19, 2018 at the Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport, Indiana and from 9 A.M. until the time of service Friday at St. John’s Lutheran Church.
